When another 100G port on a Cisco chassis has to go live, the QSFP-100G-ERL-S fills the QSFP28 slot as a direct compatible for the identically numbered Cisco optic. It is programmed so the host reads it as the ERL-S module it expects — no configuration edits, no special handling — and diagnostic data over DDM/DOM flows to the platform from the moment the link trains. In a mixed population of optics it behaves no differently from the part it replaces. Verification against Cisco host expectations is completed on every unit before it is boxed for the shelf.
